“I hate doing social media!”
“I haven’t got the head space.”
“I’ve got nothing to say.”
“I know it’s important, but it’s just not me.”
These are all things I would have told myself 12 months ago.
As a 46-year-old, building a brand on social media was a dreaded necessity. It held a similar place in my heart to a trip to the dentist or buying insurance.
However, when I started my own business, I knew that one of the easiest ways to start new conversations was to enter the big wide online world.
So I gave it a go.
Surprisingly, after consistently sharing on Instagram and LinkedIn, I would actually admit to enjoying myself now.
Here are 5 things that have helped me enjoy building my brand on social media:
👉 1. Frame it as part of a long term goal.
Start by working out how social media can feed a bigger business goal. Then it becomes part of what needs to happen rather than just what you should be doing.
👉 2. Get clear on who you’re talking to.
Knowing your audience always makes it easier to know what to say, and by addressing their pain points directly, you establish yourself as an expert.
🤘 3. Have fun.
If it’s not fun, it’s going to be harder to prioritise. Where you can, integrate topics that showcase your personality and passions.
✋ 4. Get help.
I paid for coaching, but you might need a photographer, a strategy, or just someone to keep you accountable.
👊 5. Just do it.
Start small and be consistent. You don’t need to be the next influencer; just show up with intention. Actually make time to plan out what you want to say, and then say it. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.
Go nuts team!
PS As a brand identity designer, I don’t manage social media accounts. However, if you need help with getting the right tone of voice for your brand, some new photos, or just need some content ideas, I’m happy to chat. 😇
